valve bolts 1980 1100 interstate

Postby wdwillis » Tue May 28, 2013 12:04 am

so my son and i were working through replacing a water pump tonight on his 80 interstate. (many kudos to wingadmin's awesome doc for that)
while we had it drained, he wanted to replace the valve gaskets...

on the right side is where disaster struck.
the top rear valve bolt (needle valve?) broke... it looks like a chunk of it is still in the block.

looking for some direction on how to resolve this... his concern is it is aluminum, and not exactly overly meaty...
he's afraid if we tap and die, it will crack the block, and leave us totally boned.

any advice would be appreciated

I assume you are talking about the bolts that hold the valve cover on..they can be drilled out..and retapped. Many have done it..just go small as you can you might be able to just retap with the same size..you might try a small left hand drill it may catch the piece and pull it out...

Note if that's it, it's not the block but the head and they can be replaced for $20 complete with valves on eBay..usually.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83

yes, the bolts holding the valve covers on...

that is excellent information to have. gonna line up a back head now... my son's got a friend who says he can basically spark a piece of metal to the remaining bolt in the head to twist it out. barring that we go to tapping... and if that fails, we resort to new head...

the initial sparking a bit of metal to the bolt, and backing it out worked. :D :D :D :D :D

of course, the only bike junkyard around here had nothing for us to replace with, so we had to order, and will now have to wait until friday to ride.

which of course led to "well it's not running anyway..." so now the fenders are off, as well as the side panels and the fake tank and seat....

off to painting tonight...
