tips on removing final drive

Postby flajockjd » Thu May 30, 2013 3:53 pm

On my new to me 82 interstate....i am attempting to remove rear wheel to get to gas tank...all went well until I got to the 3 bolts connecting final drive to drive shaft..a 14mm socket have two undone but same tool slips around hard to get to inboard bolt nearest to wheel....Q: Is there a special tool that only mother Honda techs can use...if I strip the head of this bolt ..then what
Thank in advance

I always used a standard 14mm box-end wrench for those bolts:

The nuts on the GL1500 are so close into the drive that I have to use the open end of the wrench.

But no magic or special tool - just a bit of flexibility involved.

ummm...vice grips? :)

You can get sockets that are specifically meant for removing rounded bolts like that as well. Then, replace it - keep in mind that those bolts are flanged, so make sure the replacement is also flanged. I believe the flanged surface is ridged, to act as a locknut, to keep it from backing off.
