Newbee with questions????

Postby pastor_jordan » Wed Jun 05, 2013 12:59 pm

I am a young pastor who has wanted a bike for awhile! A guy in my church gave me a bike this week! I have rode dirt bikes but thats it and that has been 10yrs. The bike seems great 1983 GL1100 Love it It has been sitting a while so there is a couple of problems.
1 The key is hard to turn it goes in and pushes down but sometimes wont turn.

2 The front brakes look new but. Are extremely soft.

Any help or comments would be great.

Are you sure that bike is a 1983? I think if you check again you will find it is a 1982. That 2 tone brown was only available in 1982.

I assume that you are talking about the key in the ignition. Try using a spray lube of some sort. WD40 may work for a while but won't last too long.

For the brakes, they may just need to have the brakes bled with fresh brake fluid. Try that first and see if that improves it.

Welcome to the forum Pastor. Good folks willing to help whenever they can.

1. Use Lock-Ease in all of your locks. You may have to put several courses of it into each lock, (i.e. helmet, trunk, trunk release, saddlebags) and turn them a bunch to work out the 30+ years of dirt and gunk. It is a graphite, and won't draw dirt and dust like WD-40 will. But it should clean it up after several squirts and turns. Put a rag under the locks when you squirt them, as this stuff can be messy.

2. What do you mean by soft on your brakes? Does that mean spongy? If so, I would change out the fluid totally and bleed them well, and replace the old rubber brake lines with braided stainless steel lines. They are much better at not letting the lines expand, allowing for quicker response, and not getting a spongy feel. But for sure I would completely drain the lines, and put new fluid in. Check the pads too.

3. Find out when the timing belts were changed. Beside tires and brakes, the timing belts are the next most important thing to look at.

Have fun, ride safe, and keep us posted.

I was just wondering if this was the color we are looking at? The rims are 83's on the bike pictured.

That is interesting............."82 Aspencade also had analog gauges as well as the compressor controls were on top of the tank housing and the '83 has digital gauges with the compressor controls integrated into the gauge cluster. '83 also has cast aluminum rims and the '82 has the Comstar rims. Not sure why it is registered as an '83 unless someone replaced or painted the body parts.

Welcome aboard:

Best way to tell what year it is is to look at the plate on the steering shaft in front. That will defenitly tell you what year it really is.

My breaks were real spongy until I replaced with the ss lines. The 30+ year old rubber would give to the pressure when brakes are applied.
If timinmg belts have not been changed for a while best to replace them with belts from NAPA.

It also depended on the month the bike was manufactured that determined what parts were put on your bike. My 82 interstate has the wiring of an 83. It was made in that year late, and they were already starting to set up for wiring the 83's. It should also say on the plate on the steering shaft what month it was manufactured.
