Please help, stripped hex at bottom of fork

Postby IAAustin » Sun Jun 16, 2013 6:32 pm

I was working at the fork seals and ran into a (big?) snag. On one fork when attempting to remove the lower hex bolt I stripped it out. It only turns in place, can't tighten it or fit anything up to get it out. The other side won't even budge. My question is are they just drain bolts, or must they be removed to slide the lowers off? Tried sliding them off forcefully with no luck. Thank you!

They have to be removed. The best method for removal is using an impact driver. Also you were supposed to remove the bolts before removing the cap and spring. This helps hold things tight while removing the bolt.

Thanks for the reply..sorry if I came off too "panicky" starting another thread and all. Looking back it seems dumb of me not to realize something had to hold the uppers and lowers together  I did have the springs in place, but one side just kept spinning freely both directions. So today, I passed the headache along to the local machine shop :D I was fairly harsh trying to pull the lower off ( had springs out at the time) with that hex in place, and I know it's impossible to tell until it comes apart, but in your opinion, may I have damaged the dampers or are they pretty solid? Sorry if I seem so naive, fairly new to bike mechanics and even bikes. Thanks again!

Not knowing exactly what you did I can't say for sure but I doubt you have done any damage.
