Tempreture gage

Postby tater9951 » Wed Jun 19, 2013 9:54 am

I've got an 1982 GL1100I with a temperature gage problem it has worked fine for the 3 years I've had the bike now it barely comes off the peg .
The gas gage works fine does it have a sending unit that could cause it not to work properly I'm open to any help after 3 years of rebuilding & replacing parts I would like to ride it Thanks Tater. :?:

I know the feeling. I have nearly everything done on my 82 GL1100A but I cant get the temp gage to work. I dont remember cutting any wires but my dad helped me and he remember cutting some. After a legnthy illness he doesnt remember where they came from. I have an appointlment to get it working but I cant get it done till July 12th :(. I will let you know what they say.

Thanks guys for your posts your info I took the bike out and run about 40 miles the gage came up to the 150 degree Fahrenheit mark when I got home I tested it with my laser temperature gage it read 117 degrees last year when I road it would get to 185 degrees or a little higher it's got me a little puzzled I appreciate any help.

If your engine isn't coming up to temp,It may just be time for a new thermostat .

A cooler running engine isn`t a bad thing on a 90 degree day, its not like it has an ECM and requires certain inputs to run right. At what part of the bike did you take the lazer reading? Anywhere but under the temp. sender will give a different reading.

I took the temp readings on the radiator and thermostat housing I also tried the lower hose they were all around 115 degrees to 117 degrees the ambient temp was 90 degrees that day the only thing I've added to that area of the bike was a chin spoiler everything worked even after a new timing belt was installed there are no leaks of water, oil nothing that would give any signs of trouble I really appreciate all your help.
Thanks Tater

Well, back to your saying that your dad remembers cutting wires, thats where i`d start looking, something got cut thats affecting the temp guage, least ways thats how i see it.

Thanks but the wire cutting post wasn't me but thanks anyway I've decided to change the thermostat out it may be stuck open.
Does any body know what the torque specs are on the thermostat housing bolts for 82 GL1100I :?:
Thanks Tater
