No, probably a stuck float. Gas in your oil will be bad for the engine.

also drained oil and pulled filter to see its condition and noticed what seems to be some small metallic "floaties" in it and the oil and filter don't look to have been changed in a very long time. Is this common? for the metallic floaties?

The strong gas smell came from the oil as I drained it from the motor, this engine hasn't been started in over 6 months so I don't think at this point that it has anything to do with carbs....

It's not about the engine running. It's about gas draining from the tank to the carbs and then into the combustion chamber and then into the crankcase. No, metal "floaties" are not good. It does happen over the life of an engine but frequent oil changes keep it too a minimum.

Ok I understand the fuel smell then, very insightful, thanks. So at this point maybe a carb rebuild or do you think seafoam may clean it out.

Or on the other hand this bike runs without dying no matter where the petcock is placed, even in the off position......could this be part of the problem?

This engine really should not be run at all in the condition it is in. There is an ecellent tutorial by Randakk about bringing an old engine back to life. If you can't find it by doing a search I am sure someone here will have a link for you. Good luck.

Yes, but just a part. A petcock that will not shut off will allow gas to seep into the carbs. If the carbs are good, or working properly, gas should not be able to go any further.

there is only 30k on the bike and I cannot find a randakk article?
Also the back of the intake valves look like carbon buildup on them or maybe oil burn?
Your information and help is greatly appreciated.

That was good info for cleaning the engine but no info on freeing the stuck float :?:
