1982 GL1100 Spraying Oil

Postby zlujan » Sat Jun 22, 2013 3:25 pm

So, I just bought a 1982 GL1100 and all was going great... until I cranked on the throttle a bit. After making it to fifth under hard acceleration I realized there was a giant cloud of white smoke behind me. I pulled into my destination and quickly found out that my boots and pants were soaked (left boot the most and right pant leg the most). Does ANYONE have any idea what's going on? It's a bit worrisome given I just bought the bike. Thanks in advance.

Left boot shifter seal most likely..easy fix under $10..new seal or gasket on valve cover

right leg tach seal?? but soaked hard to figure..tach housing spacer?

Is your boot soaked with Oil or water. White smoke is coolant and if anti freeze in it you get a sweet smell as it burns -Blue smoke is oil. If you are loosing coolant and getting soaked with oil then you need to check your left hand head gasket?
Good luck

It may have been blue, I was probably almost a quarter of a mile away from it when I saw it. Also, there's some oil sitting on the engine after it does this. On both sides. I just took it for a long ride tonight (about 80 miles round trip) and there were no signs of leakage until I cranked on it coming back, then small amount of oil was on my boots again. Thank you all for your help. I truly appreciate it.

RB, would the tach seal or spacer cause the needle to jump a bit?

If its blue smoke it oil burning with a more acrid smell. If it a water and anti freeze leak into the combustion chamber the smoke is white with a sweet smell.
You say their is oil on top of engine after a run? Have you checked the engine breather hose that connects to the top of the rear of the engine? If its off it could cause oil loss that appears on the top of the engine but this does not explain the smoke.
Check the oil level as overfill may also contribute to the issue

Could the oil from the breather hose have dripped (or been blown) down onto the exhaust and then burned off?

Wanted to give you all an update. It was the shifter seal and the tach seal. I'm waiting on the tach seal, but the shifter seal fixed the spray issues completely. Thanks for all the help and advice guys.
