starting problem!

Postby crowfam7 » Thu Jun 27, 2013 8:11 am

I have a 1983 interstate with a starting problem. I have a new starter, solenoid and battery. Try to start and I only get a clicking sound in solenoid, what else is wrong? What else do I need to check?

First assume nothing.
Start as if you never saw the bike before.
Use a test probe or volt meter, attach one lead to the starter case and the other to the starter post.Hit the start button and see if there is volts there. To crank the engine, the starter needs at least 10 volts on the post.

All the readings are good. Ie above 10. Around 13. What would I check next?

Pull the plugs, flick the kill switch off, and hit the starter.

Post results.

The click.

Low battery test under load must be 10.5 or higher
bad solenoid jump the two big posts key on, if the start turns bad solenoid
bad starter circuit jump starter wires in the switch
bad starter switch see above
bad starter jump it directly from battery yours or car.
hydrolocked cylinder(s) pull spark plugs try again..with stop switch on stop!! or you will ignite gas!!! does gas squirt out one of more = hydrolock

Jump starter from good car battery..if it turns not starter
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
