1982 GL1100 Shock Replacements?

Postby sswantee » Sat Jun 29, 2013 11:22 am

Hello All, I just finished turning my 1982 GL1100 into a bagger and removed the fairing, etc. My shocks are sagging a lot when I sit on it and with both muself and my wife I lose almost all cornering clearance even with the shocks fully aired up at max psi. I know they are an inch shorter, but has anyone used the 12" Harley air shocks with success, or will I get less sag/firmer ride with a set of coiled shocks instead? I look forward to your input.

I just came in from looking at the bike again, and with the shocks at max psi, I can stand the bike upright and standing at the back, if I push down on the luggage rack with maybe 60lbs pressure I can bottom the shocks and hold it there. I never realized just how bad they were...totally worn out.I guess at this point anything is an improvement!

progressive makes air and non-air replacements but not cheap and you can rebuild the ones you have too...not too hard and several how to's on various sites maybe here too.

Thanks for the reply...I just found a good deal on a set of Honda Valkyrie 1500 take-off shocks in like new condition, so I am going to give them a try. Should be a huge improvement over what I have now.

I put Harley-Davidson Dynaglide air shocks on my `82S. I did have to reshape the mounting eyes to the shape of Honda rubber bushing`s, but that wasn`t too difficult and all the air lines and fittings are available from HD for far less $$ than Honda stuff(if you can find them).
