Ride height?

Postby kc4ky » Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:28 pm

Hello:

I am a goldwing newby. I just purchased a 1980 GL1100 in good condition. I need help to lower the ride height so I can touch the ground easeir when I stop. I am 5' 10" tall and have to tip-toe when I stop. Any help please.
Thanks
Ron

A few people have asked this - the general consensus is that the easiest (and safest) way is to cut foam out of the seat. You can gain a good inch or more doing this, without having to compromise the suspension travel.

Check the air in the suspension too. My '82 had me on tiptoes as well when I picked it up, after adjusting air pressure, I am nearly flat footed and I'm only 5'7" :D
Condition Black: Not in any particular state of mental readiness but still prepared and willing to kill everything in your general area without provocation.

Thanks for the info I did the seat carving with an electric fish cleaning knife. It turned out great and I can stand flat footed at stops now. Great website!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

On the flip side of this, I'm 6'4" and I feel like I'm riding really low. In fact, when I take turns, my rear fender drags. I was worried that my fat arse was just making the rear suspension droop. I have an air suspension and I pump it to 60 lbs, but I still feel like I'm hanging low.

I replaced my original Honda shocks with some 416 Progressives this spring, and the bike sits up at least an inch higher than it used to. Really noticeable when it's on the sidestand, it leans over a lot more than it used to with the old shocks.

Most likely it's the brand new springs inside the shocks versus the old tired worn springs in the originals.

Also did the saddle adjustment using an electric meat carving knife. Cut out @ 1 1/2 inches from bottom of foam so as not to alter the upper foam profile that fits into the fitted saddle vinyl. Also removed a little extra were the thighs hang over the front of the saddle when standing. I'm 5'8" and now can stand flat footed with Motorcycle boots. Note that you also lower the center of gravity which improves handling.
