83 GL1100I oil coming out of Crankcase vent

Postby snap234 » Sun Jul 07, 2013 1:27 pm

Hello fellow Wingers, I am new to the group and i am hooked. I love this site, great info and great responses. I need a little help on this. i have spent some time searching but i kind of want to hear the general consensus.
My Bike:
83 GL1100I, about 50k on the odometer. Fires right up no power issues, plugs are newer (new ones going in shortly) but they look good. no smoke out of the tail pipe. This is my daily driver, i ride every day rain or shine.
My Issue:
Riding home from work, 16 mile drive, and about 1/2 mile from my house i can smell oil burning, i look down and dont really see much so i ride home. When i get home i look under the bike and its spitting oil out of this little black cup looking thing that the blowback tube from the crankcase routes into. There is a lot of oil that was spit out of where the tube goes into the cup looking thing. Sorry i dont know the technical term for it. I let it sit the next day started it up, ran it around the block a few times after letting it warm up and no oil leaking.
Compression test:
im not sure the cylinder order on this bike, my point of view is from sitting on the bike.
Right side front: 100 PSI, put a little oil in and it went to about 105 psi
Right side rear: 90 PSI, after oil went right to 90 and stayed there. The other cylinders did the same thing.

What do you guys think of my test results and what could be the issue? Thanks for reading and posting.

compression test= ignition off? Throttle wide open? hot or cold? Try putting a squirt of oil in cylininders and retest=if psi is higher, then bad rings. Regards, Johnyy,

sorry, didn't see you did the oil thing.,
Empty the plastic thingy that the plastic tube flows into- full of water and oil I would guess. It is a water collecter from the crankcase. Regards, Johnyy

Many just take off the can and leave the hose it's was a CA thing not really needed. If you leave on just empty once a year. But do check your oil level could be too high.

If you check the compression w/o the throttle wide open you need to redo the test. 100/90 is real low. 170 perfect, 160's great, 150's good, 140's OK, below 140 time for rebuild although Gl's will run down into the low 100's. Also all the cylinders should be within 5 lbs. of each other otherwise you'll get off balance running..hard on the rods and crank.

adding oil and it comes up = ring issues, if not valve issues..either settings or seats.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
RB

The guys are correct but make sure the throttle is WIDE open and the kill switch turned off to do the compression test. Have you checked you have not overfilled with oil?

So i finally had a chance to really look at it. After a long ride, 10 miles or so, is when the leak occurs. On the backside of the engine (backside meaning sitting on bike looking forward, the back side of the engine) Oil is spraying out of some seal, literally spraying. I think i found it in the parts catalog, i attached a couple pics. The parts catalog calls it the cap tappet adjusting hole. item #4 and 10 on the attached screenshot. Looks like the o-ring is bad. Can someone confirm my diagnosis and also before i go tearing into this to replace the o-ring is there anything i need to be aware of?

Sorry for the wrong information, thanks for taking the time to read and reply, much appreciated.

No just remove the plug and replace the O ring. The plug is generally removed to place a spanner on the alternator nut to turn the engine over manually when checking valve timings etc. It could be that a PO has done this and damaged the o ring when replacing the plug.?
