swapping an engine from 1983 aspencade to a 1983 interstate

Postby trucker1 » Tue Apr 20, 2010 9:28 pm

Just joined the site and cannot see if anyone has run into this problem.
I blew the oil pump in my 1983 1100 interstate and took out the crankshaft, so i bought an engine from a 1983 1100 aspencade. the engine is in and almost everything is hooked up again but at the front right of the engine there is a wiring harness that comes up from the bottom, it has six wires in it and the corresponding harness on the bike side only has two green wires. what wires do what in each harness so i can get my lady back on the road where she belongs.the engine side has six wires as follows black-yellow-red-green-blue-white the bike side has white with red stripe and dark green with orange. the original engine side was dark green with orange dashes and light green with red dashes.
can anyone help me with this

thanks to wingadmin for the info on what each wire is for, one more day of work and the old girl will be rolling again much to the delight of myself and my two sons

The Aspencade has a switch that tells the exact gear it's in, whereas the Interstate only identifies Neutral and Fifth (Overdrive).

On the Aspencade, each of the following is grounded according to the gear it's in:

Yellow = First
Green = Neutral
White = Second
Blue = Third
Red = Fourth
Black = Fifth

On the Interstate:

Light Green/Red = Neutral
Green/Orange = Fifth

Connect the Green on the engine to the Light Green/Red wire on your harness, and the Black on the engine to your Green/Orange on your harness, and you should be good to go.

Hi I am kinda in your same delima but, :oops: I am just going to change my stator water pump ,timing belts and just check the overall condition of everything.. As the po. never did things he said :twisted: . So i am now sitting in the garage with my wing on the lift table.. I have never taken on a job like this so any help on actually removing the engine correctly would be very helpful.. I could probably do it, but there is always a easier way to do things thats why I am checking in this forum you all seem to know so much about this bike.. I have a 83 aspencade it ran ok until a few weeks back when it finally bite the dust and I barley made it home.. so now i might as well do it right ... I currently am taking pictures at every step so I have a visual aid to a certain step in my tear down.. So in the mean time I will be checking any and all info on the subject..... :mrgreen: Thanks guys in advance

I finished the swap out of my 1981 a few months ago. Like you I had never done a swap on a mototcycle before. A few cars but that was a life time ago. Get the manual and follow each step. Worked for me with not one surprise. While you have it out check and test as much as you can and check out the how to on the site. WingAdmin has spent a lot of time on them and they saved me a lot of time and taught me a lot. Good Luck!!
