SLOW CRANK AND HOT STARTER AFTER ENGINE INSTALL

Postby PRACTIKALGUY » Thu Jul 11, 2013 9:20 am

I have an 83 Aspencade which had a stripped alternator shaft and bolt. After pulling the engine, replacing the bolt and shaft, cleaning up the starter clutch, I put it back together, changing the timing belts along the way. I had a fully charged battery, but when I hit the starter button, it turned over very hard and slowly. The starter also got very hot. I even tried a little starter fluid to try to get it to fire, but it just backfired a bit. It didn't do that before pulling the engine. Any ideas?

Relieve the compression drag first by removing all 4 plugs and see if it still cranks slow.
This will tell if its a bind in the engine or a starter problem.
Normally it will spin very quick without plugs.
Also, double check the plug wiring. Its easy to get them in the wrong order.

I have spark on all 4 cyl. The plugs look to only go one way: with the notches on the plug covers fitting in the groove on the head cover. However, it's not even firing a bit with starting fluid. Both cam pulleys are up with the bike at T1. Weird.

You haven't said if you pulled the plugs to relieve the compression. You probably shouldn't try to start it until you do more trouble shooting. Turn the engine over by hand at the stator bolt not the starter to check. If it is that tight something is definitely out of whack.

I checked and there is fuel coming from the fuel pump. So, it's got spark and fuel. I tried a bit of starting fluid again, and it just backfired on both sides a couple of times. I don't see how the timing could be that far off.

So, I think I found the issue. I pulled the engine again and, as soon as I cracked the rear cover loose, the engine began turning over normally. Once the cover was off, I could see that the pulser shaft pin had sheared off. I assume that I didn't have it lined up right and it bound up. The shaft seems to have about a quarter inch vertical play, but none side to side. Other than the shaft, should I replace anything else? I'm worried something else may have been jacked up when I tried to start it. Also, what's the best way to remove the shaft. My manual is no help. Thanks.
