83 Aspencade can pulse generator be backwards?

Postby PRACTIKALGUY » Fri Jul 12, 2013 1:29 pm

After getting the engine back in my cycle, it won't start at all. With some starting fluid it will backfire a bit. I pulled the plugs and have spark....fuel pumping from the pump. Also, it ran before pulling the engine and rear cover to replace the alternator shaft. The manual didn't say anything about the pulse generator rod, but I figured the pin should line up with the notch, and got it the best I could; the cover went on. I pulled the little PG cover, and it was rotating with the engine. Put engine back in cycle. All 4 cyls are sparking, but could it have been 180 off? Are they sparking out of order? It doesn't seem likely, but I thought I'd ask before pulling the engine again, taking it to the mechanic, or selling it at a great loss. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

did you get your plugs wires in the right order? I just r and r my engine and had the same problem, the wires were out. if you are going by the repair manual, it is wrong. from right to left it is 1 2 3 4.

Did you ever get this sorted out?
I just installed an '84 1200 engine in a '82 1100 frame,
and used the '82 ignition...
I thought I put it all in correctly, but when I went to start it... well... just like you said...
Yeah, it was 180 out.
I ended up swapping the wires in the "distributor" 4pin plug, to swap the 1/3 2/4 pickups.

The future owner of your bike will be cursing you next time he tries to diagnose a pulse generator problem. :)

I did. I pulled the engine a second time and, as soon as I loosened the rear cover, the engine spun freely. The pin on the pulsar shaft had sheared off. After ordering a new pulsar shaft, and being very careful lining it up with the notch, it runs fine.
BTW, does anyone know the diameter of the exhaust crossover pipe? It's bent all to hell, so I'm going to cut it out and replace it will flexpipe.

I ended up cutting out the center portion of the crossover, making sure that I had a few inches left on each side. Then, I just went to Autozone, bought an 18" section of flexpipe and a couple of U clamps...works like a charm, and maintains the integral design of a crossover pipe. BTW, a borrowed (from O'Reilly's) chain roller cutter worked nicely on both the crossover and flexpipe.
