Better results through perserverance.

In this thread a week or so ago (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17853)
I was offering my complaints about the GL1100 Interstate we own .
It is a joint venture between me and my 19 years old son and we have invested some considerable time, energy and money getting this old bike back to nice running condition

Over the course of the past week we have turned the corner.
The carb rebuild is finished - the starter rebuilt and working properly - and it starts and runs really well at this time.
One way I like to guage the efficiency of a the engine is monitor fuel economy.

Before this round of work the bike averaged at best 33 MPG.
Since the rebuild we have run the bike several hundred miles burning tanks of fuel under various condtions...
Here are the results thus far..

Tankful burned while running 70-75 Interstate = 37 MPG
Tankful burned while running around back roads = 39 MPG
Added MMO to 2 tanks full and measured again primarily running back roads near 45-55 MPH = 41 MPG

It seems the more we run it now the better it gets...

My theory ---?
The old carb was running way rich, I think leaving carbon and gunk deposits on the cylinder walls, and intake and exhaust valves.
As we now have it burning the proper amount of fuel these deposits are beginning to clean themselves off (I know the carbs are clean inside as I cleaned them). I think the bike will keep getting better for a while as we run it clean..then a valve adjustment and final synch on the carbs shold bring it right into specs and we will experience the joy of a good running GL1100.. ( I already know it is faster than before ;) )

Congrats on getting over the hill. These old bikes as well as anything just need regular preventative maintenance and a little TLC.

MARVEL® MYSTERY OIL

ADDED TO GAS OR DIESEL:
Marvel Mystery Oil® lubricates the entire fuel system-fuel pumps, fuel injectors or carburetors and the top-portion of the cylinders. These are areas, that by design, motor oil does not reach. Using Marvel Mystery Oil® in your fuel extends the life of these vital components by providing them with lubrication that fuel alone does not provide.

I use auto transmission fluid 5 oz to a tank of gas. Cleans and lubes and gets great gas milage. Was getting 33-35 mpg before atf using atf I get 44-46 mpg.
