82 starting issue

Postby gr8jeep » Sat Jul 20, 2013 1:19 pm

Of course the bike I am selling has a starting issue , never fails , guy comes to look at it , I have it out already and have started it once before the guy got here, go to start it and all I gets a click ......... uugggghhhhh, so what I have checked this far is the battery which shows 13.9 volts with nothing running and 14.9 to 15 while idling , checked the connections on the starter relay doohickie , all good . If I cross the terminals on the relay the starter turns over and the bike will start as long as the key is on , im lost now , any ideas ......... Thanks in advance, gr8jeep

If the starter solenoid does click, replace it.
If it does not click, verify the neutral lamp is on.
The last thing is to clean the contacts in the start button.

It definitely clicks that's about it , any automotive ones compatible that you might know of , it turns over very good when I cross the 2 terminals.......

Even tho I have never used one.Something should fit the bill.Certainly there will be changes in wiring involving the 2 Large red wires.Im certain a auto solenoid wont have them.
The other requirement would be that the coil needs to have both terminals for it instead of using the case as the ground.

I had this VERY same problem with my 82 less than 2-3 weeks ago and you can read about it on here. I replaced the solenoid ($15) and Starter ($85) and it continued to do the same thing. Completely cleaned each connection with a wire brush on both poles on the solenoid, on the starter and on both battery cables. I also inspected each one carefully. I found some bare wire on the cable leading from the solenoid to the starter. I cleaned the cable and wrapped it good with some electrical tape. After I put everything back together it starts like a champ. I dont really know if it was the bare wire grounding out the solenoid or the dirty connections but it cured the problem. A friend who is a vintage bike mechanic told me about the connections. Thats seems to be a culprit on a lot of older bikes that seems to get overlooked. I hope this helps.

Everything is cleaned and tight , picked up a new starter relay , got it today , gonna throw it in in the AM tomorrow , i'll post if it resolves my issue. Thanks for the suggestions , I will double check it again , i'm also thinking maybe my battery has lost its cranking amps and I may really need a battery , will see.

Yes that could be an issue as well. I got a new battery at the begining of the season. Good luck!

Put the new starter relay in and turned the key on hit the start button and she fired right up , keeping my fingers crossed that I can start it randomly thru the day. So far its pointing toward the relay being the culprit .

Seems I am still having an issue , bike started fine all day on Friday , when I went to start it Saturday it spun over a few times and then slowed up and stopped , I went and bought a new battery to eliminate that being the issue . Then I pulled the plugs covered the cylinders with rags and hit the start button , once again all I get is the clicking . So I go back to crossing the terminals on the starter relay and she spins over throwing fuel out of the 2 right side cylinders , now it put the plugs back in and I can get her started but not by pushing the starter button , starter button works because I hear it making the relay open and close ........to bad , the bike runs great when its started up , gonna have to pull it as being for sale for awhile till I get this resolved , thanks for any and all input , the saga goes on :)

Sorry to hear that. Have you checked all the cables to see if there is any bare wire showing? Mine was hidden. Also you may want to spary some contact cleaner in where the starter button is. Be careful. I have heard there are small springs that can jump out. This is apparently another common starting issue.
