Where is the Temperature sending unit on a 1980 GL1100?

Postby gwolfe » Mon Aug 05, 2013 1:09 pm

I have a 1980 GL1100 and noticed that my temperature guage did not seem to be responding corrrectly when I fired it up theis weekend. The bike has set for about a year, but fired up immediately. I was checking it out for a ride I'm planning in the next few weeks and my temp gauge was very slow to respond initially and only came up to the first point on the white bar...it then would drop off to below the cold mark...it did this 3-4 times in about 30 miles The bike has 103,500 +/- on it and I'm assuming that either the temp sender unit or the gauge has failed...where is the sending unit located and how should I trouble shoot which item is my problem?

If your fuel gauge is also acting up,both are fed by a 7 volt regulator attached to the back of the instrument cluster.
If it's just the temp, the sending unit is directly behind the radiator.Follow the upper hose to the block. There's 2 units there. It's the one with 1 wire on it.The one with 2 wires is the fan switch.

Briefly touching the wire to ground will push the needle into the red zone...Don't hold it there...

There are specific resistance measurements for the sending unit that are covered in the manual.

Also...If there is air in the system, the sensor may not be in contact with the antifreeze so verify that the system is full and is actually warming up.
A bad thermostat(stuck open) can keep a engine very cool...I check the engine temp(not the radiator) with a IR meter.

Finally got some time to look at my 1980 GL1100 Guage/Temp Sender issue. I have located the Temp. Sender unit, but can't quite figure out how to get it exposted to the point that I can remove the wire and check the gauge by briefly shorting the gauge out. My GL1100 has Windjammer IV fairings...so far I have removed the lower fairings, the seat and the faux tank...there is a stamped metal plate that sits vertically behind the fan (the back of the fan motor actually penetrates this plate). I can just see the Temp sender, but not the wire and am not sure how I get access to the sender unit so I can trouble shoot. I downloaded a GL1100 service manual when I bought this bike a few years ago, but can't locate it at this time. It looks like I should be able to remove the four bolts that seem to secure this plate and gain access to the temp. sender, but wonder if it isn't an upper motor mount? Your assistance is appreciated.

Thanks

The manual says remove the radiator to get to the Temp Sensors and Thermostat. You can download the manual from GoldWingDocs.com :)
