Recommend a quality starter replacement?

Postby Sask_Aspencade » Mon Aug 05, 2013 11:27 pm

My 1982 GL1100A starter is showing its age - screeching a bit during and immediately after releasing start switch. I don't think I want to try to rebuild it myself. Can anyone recommend a quality replacement starter out there?

No idea on long term, of course, because I've only had in a few days, but it fit like OEM, and spins like the devil.
Pleased.

DB ELECTRICAL, u can find them on ebay and they cost $85.50 free shipping and very fast shipping. I bought one for my 82 gl1100 interstate and my brother bought one for his 1100 standard. they work great!! :D

Only to continental US, of course.
OP is in Sask, shipping is over $50.

Pretty sure they all come out of the same Asian factory...DB doesn't actually say they make them, and they have the exact same part number (SMU0069) as the UMI starter I bought, and same as Arrowhead, Western PowerSports, and many others.

It's a bit freaky having the engine spin so fast now!

I'm having the starter mailed to Billings MT where a friend of mine is going on a trip and staying in a hotel, so I'll get it shipped at $0. I figure I'll keep the old starter around, just in case it becomes necessary to have it rebuilt in the future if the new one caves. Thanks for the help.

Oh come on.
IF they were made in the states, they'd be wrapping themselves in the flag telling you about it...and they sure as heck wouldn't be able to sell them for 85 shipped!
Only one I know that is actually made "domestically" is Ricks, and they are a heck of a lot more than 85 bucks.

Seriously, how many factories can there possibly be making starters for 30+ year old motorcycles?
I'm fairly convinced there is two. One is Taiwan, making most of them, and Ricks.

so whats ur point? does it matter where its made? if u were looking for american made then why have a honda? oh i get it, ur looking for an argument? well im not going to give it to u, im to old to argue over sumthing so stupid, he asked for a good replacement i told him where me n my brothers got ours and told him how they worked for us and the price was good, so what is ur complaint? if u look around DB Electrical is probably going to be the cheapest and thats the bottom line. 8-)

I put a db on my 1100 a year ago --13months It died. 1 month out of warranty.

The guy on the phone said to order a new one and in a month if not satisfied to return it.

Got the second starter. Well the gear that came with it would not go on the splines but in only 5 ways. not all the way around the whole gear. Impossible to get it to line up in that silly little hole on the engine. So I had to take the head off the dead starter and use the old gear.
Called db and they said too return it --I did and they sent me a refund for the 2nd starter.
Definitly made outside the usa

Sorry you misunderstood.
No, you didn't "get it".
