Windshield too big!

Postby alastair.kj » Tue Aug 06, 2013 7:57 am

So the windshield on my 81 interstate is too large and I'm wondering if there is a remedy for this besides replacing it. Could it be cut down or something? I really only need to remove 2-4 inches so that I am looking over it rather than through it (makes it impossible to drive in the rain). It's already as low as it goes where it connects to the faring.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Yep you can cut it down..most use jig saw with fine blade. tape the point of the cut cut slowly let the saw draw you across..buff cut edge with 1000+ grit wheel or paper..that's it. Slow is good..too fast of a blade and the pleas tic will melt..NOT good.

But be careful what you cut..you might try sitting up higher at speed ..and feel the buffeting you'll get with you head is above the screen!!

I just cut 2" off my 88.the top was directly in line with traffic.
I used blue tape on both sides.Marked it off with a pen and a stick to match the same curves.
Same tool as above.
I cut very slowly. After 1/2 way across,I stopped and taped the cut on both sides to keep the plastic from vibrating and possibly cracking.
About 3" from the end,I moved to the other side and cut to where I stopped.
I used a flat file to shape the rough edges and 320 grit on a block to finish the cut.
It looks like factory

Instead of cutting it down from the top I removed some material from the bottom thus lowering it that way. It leaves a gap at the edges where it should flow with the fairing but the top surface is still factory smooth.

The only silly question is the one you don`t ask. Everything else is game.
