83 GL1100I forks

Postby petedriver » Wed Aug 07, 2013 2:46 pm

Whats the best way to remove the bolt on the bottom of the forks to drain the oil?? I've tried but can't get it to move. I need to change the oil seals. I don't like to sound dumb but can I leave them in and still get the forks apart?? Or is that bolt doing something other than just a drain plug ?? HELP!!

You'll need to remove the wheel.
Up inside the middle of the hole is a Allen bolt, remove it and all the oil will drain out.
Lift the dust seal and remove the metal retainer ring.
It may take several bumps down with the slide to get the seal to come out.
If your going that far,may I suggest removing the forks and doing a full service on them.
Check for a bent fork by rolling one against the other.
Replace the slide bushings.
1000 grit polish the inside of the slides.
Clean the antidive system.
Put the forks (only) back on the bike and use a piece of glass to check alignment.
I've done this on mine because I had a so called "stiction" problem.
Careful service and alignment greatly improved the front end to the nth degree.

I assume the air is released before draining?

Any way after the oil is drained- How does one refill with new fork oil? How much on a 83 gl1100 goes in each fork?

Mine needs changing but I have not figured out how to refill.
Thanks.

Yes you release the air.
I have filled 2 ways.
Reassemble and pump the new oil up into the fork through the drain plug with a syringe.
Or my prefered method...reassemble the complete front end and check the travel.pour the oil directly into the top of the forks and then put the springs and caps back on.
