rear parking/turn signals on a 83GL1100 aspencade

Postby roadwanderer2 » Thu Aug 08, 2013 5:04 am

hello people. im new to this site, i just bought an 83 GL1100A aspencade. i needed to replace the back tire on my bike, (which i did myself and wasnt an easy thing to do), and in doing this i cut the wires for the running/turn signals to remove the side boxes and in doing so, the wires for the amber lights that are inside the boxes for running and turning signals wont work anymore. what i dont understand is these are 1157 bulbs,(2 prong sockets), but have 3 wires comming from them. 1 red wire and 2 black wires. no matter how i connect the 2 black wires, they refuse to operate correctly. i know the red is the power wire, but this is the first time ive ever seen 2 black wires going to a 2 prong 1157 bulb socket for a total of 3 wires. im stumped, i dont know how to get this right. ive even tried to go to a single prong socket, (1156 bulb socket), but have 2 wires left over that i cant figure out what to do with. can someone PLEASE help me figure this out.

thank you very much.

stuart.

By the schematic...the aspy yellow turn signal does not use the "marker lamp" part of the dual filament bulb.Ya really don't want a yellow marker in the back anyways...
The 2 wires...By the book appear to be black and brown. It's not real clear.
Either way..it shows that the black ties to the harness green wire which is ground. This goes to the outside of the lamp base.
The other wire from the bike goes to the high brightness filament. One of the 2 center terminals.
If you pick the wrong one,the turn signal may not flash properly, just connect it to the other one.
The park lamp part of the 1157 is just not used....unless the lens is changed to red.

hello virgilmoble:
thanks for your reply about this problem. unfortunetly for me, the previous owner did a "hatchet" job wiring the rear marker/turn signals. these light sockets are built into the bottom of the side boxes, they are not "external" signal lights. they have orange lenses on them, not yellow. there are 3 wires comming out from the under the rear fender on each side with 1 red wires on each side and 2 black on each side. i can assume the red wires are the power wires and the blacks are one for ground and the other black wire goes to the brighter side of the 1157 bulb and the other black wire goes to the "dim" side of the bulb wire. i DID get the left side to work, but now i have no power at all comming from the bike to the right side box light which is a running and turn signal light. i guess im gonna have to remove the seat and use a test light to find out where there is a lost connection causing the power loss to the right side.

well, theres good news to report. i found the problem. after removing the seat, i found BOTH rear signal wires came disconnected. once i reconnected them, i was able to get BOTH rear signal lights to work. :D . now i dont have to use the old fashion "hand jesture " for right turns lol. now onto other things to get this bike back into top notch shape.

while i was working on the front brakes, ie: bleeding the front system, i was able to get the left front caliper to bleed air out of it, and when i tried to bleed the right front, the bleeder screw was so clogged, i had to remove it, clean it out with a torch tip cleaner, put it back onto the caliper, tried to bleed it, but no fluid came out. i tried to "wiggle" the right brake hose, and in doing so, every time i moved it, a tiny drop of brake fluid came out. im thinking that the brake hose may be collasped inside, or their might be a problem with the front brake line splitter. does anyone have any ideas or suggestions, please reply,

thanks,

Stuart,
Have a look at these, some people think they are excellent. They can be found on this site.

hi redial:

that was a very interesting post about those s/s brake lines, something that i think i'll check into. sounds like they might be good and also LOOK good on my '83 1100 aspencade since it already has all the little chrome "goodies" on it.

good morning folks.

just wanted to let you all know that i figured out a really easy way to get the rear signal lights to work when you have to rewire them without color coded wires to go by...........get them to work correctly, take your wifes nail polish, (or any other type of enamel paint and a brush), put male and female connectors on the ends and paint them to match each end on both sides, that way if and when you need to disconnect them, you wont have any problems figureing out which wire goes where if your wires are NOT color coded so you dont keep burning out fuses or bulbs while trying to reconnect them.

to redial:

just wanted to let you know that i figured out what i was doing wrong with the brake hoses. after getting the shop repair cd disk for this bike, i "skimmed" thru it and found out that the right front and rear brakes work together from the brake pedel and the left front works alone from the hand lever. very interesting, i didnt know this before i read it. NOW everything is very clear to me :? .
