New Mirrors: Suggestions/Help?

Postby alastair.kj » Thu Aug 15, 2013 10:59 pm

So I need to replace the mirrors on my 81 interstate. I'm thinking that I would like to get mirrors that attach to the bars rather than the fairings.

I'm wondering two things:
1) How/where do they attach?
2) Which mirrors would you suggest that I get? Doesn't have to be fancy or anything, but some input would be appreciated!

Cheers,
Alastair

I fitted bar mirrors to mine via a pair of clamps similar to these.

Just a thought - hope it helps. :)
The only silly question is the one you don`t ask. Everything else is game.

Don't your brake and clutch handles have threads in them for mirrors? I got mine off of Ebay for $15 out the door that fit right into the handles, and they have been great. The PO had one of the originals all goofed up, and am kinda looking to replace them, but I do like the ones on my handles.

Here is what I bought. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Hond ... ee&vxp=mtr

They are about 5 bucks more than they were 2 years ago, but they are well built for the money.

I like those.

Yes they do. I like to ask questions for the sake of being completely sure.

These mirrors just screw right in, they don't need a nut to hold them in underneath or anything? Are they adjustable after installation?

Does anyone know of any Canadian companies/sites that parts can be ordered from for the sake of not having to pay duties?

Yes, they just screw into the threaded hole, and no, they don't have a screw on the bottom. Once they are on the angle you like, then there is a top nut that screws down onto the lever, kinda like a jam nut. And they are very much adjustable. Very seldom do I need to re-adjust them. The only drawback I have found is when I am working around the bike, I need to be more careful about not bumping into them. But they are easily adjusted when I get ready to go on a ride. And my motorcycle cover still fits fine right over these mirrors, when I'm not parked in the garage.

Here is a pic for a little clearer explanation. Also just wanted to mention that I do go quite fast on the highway sometimes, and the wind has never caused them to get knocked out of adjustment. They might wear out in a few years and may be moved by the wind, but for now they are nice and tight at the adjustment knuckle.

I don't know what part of North America you live in, but you could always have them shipped to my house, and ride down to Michigan and we can put them right on the bike. No duty.

Shoot, I was just in Bay City last week on Friday! I'm now in Calgary, Alberta however. Thanks for the offer though. I'll try and find a good local shop or something.

Cheers.

I removed the mirrors off my fairing and got a pair of GL1000 mirrors and mounted on handlebars. They work great. :D

Nice call. What did you do about covering up the holes the mirrors attach to in the fairings?

I just bought some screws and nuts from the Ace hardware store that matched the other 2. Not many people ever even notice that this isn't stock.

Check around Calgary at ANY motorcycle shop and ask if they order from Parts Canada. Check their catalogues. Parts Canada's warehouse is in Calgary... at least one of them. Another is in Nepean. (Ottawa). They sell a lot of accessories, so you should be able to find a suitable mirror pair from them. Alternatively, order online and have them ship via Post Office. No duty on stuff that don't cost much, and when the post office collects the taxes (if they even do), they only charge an extra $5 fee on top of the taxes. Most stuff I order online that costs $50 or less does not get even taxes added.

Oh, by the way... Parts Canada's catalogues are online as well at their web site.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

Ahhh....THAT explains how I got my Saddlemen seat the next day!

Pretty sure every bike shop in Canada has an account with Parts Canada.

Did the same thing as parbrandon1. I changed out all the screws so they matched. No one has ever noticed. Purchased the mirrors on ebay.

Ok, so I now have finally bought some new mirrors. They are RWD Ovals that mount onto the handlebar screw slot using an adapter. I'm having troubles aligning everything and getting it all snug. Maybe it was silly to assume they would practically install themselves, but I did figure it would be a little simpler.

What might I be doing wrong?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. In the mean time I will continue to play around with them and see if I can get it on my own.

Cheers
