looking for advice

Postby triax01 » Sun Aug 18, 2013 4:00 pm

my 82 honda gl1100 feels like i have a front wheel wobble, i put a new rim and tire on her but still have the same wobble at low speeds . i have changed the front fork oil and have checked for looseness on the steering head bearings, to me they seem tight. today i had the wing on its center stand , i was going to replace the rear brake pads, they turned out to be in good shape. while it was still up on the center stand, i started the bike and put her in first gear to insure that the rear brakes were working fine, i noticed that as the rear wheel was turning, they seems to be a bump in the rubber, the rim looks like it is running true, just the rubber seems bad. could this warp in the rubber transfer to the front and make me think that the wobble is from the front?

any thoughts would be great
thanks in advance

That is quite possible, the wobble transferring thru the rear suspension. I have seen that happen with brand new tires, so even if you have a lot of miles on them and are due for changing now is a good reason to do so. If that tire blows out on you at hiway speed you are going to have your hands all kinds of full and if you managed to get to the side of the road without dropping it you will be lucky. I don't take tires for granted. Any indication it needs replacement, do it.

I had a front-end wobble on my 1100 that was driving me crazy trying to find - it turned out that the front end wobble was in fact caused by improperly installed swingarm pivots by the previous owner. Removed pivots, replaced correctly, torqued to spec, and the "front end" wobble went away.

Swingarm bearings are something seldom checked but have a large effect on steering control. You are definitely right, Wing, if the suspension is out of wack, it can knock a lot of other things out of wack.

ADVICE
Replace the rear tyre immediately as if it blows whilst riding you will be in lot of trouble.
If the problem persists then follow wing admin advice and check the rear swinging arm pivot bushes

Thanks all for the advice.
I just bought new rear tire and a used rim from straighwings. A guy in my area who deals in vintage wings. So if I have the time this weekend and if I feel comfortable , I will put it on . As soon as It is done I will post another reply.

Cheers

Remember to "MOLY" lube the splines when you have the rear wheel off, clean off all the old lube that is on it, brake cleaner works great, whare a face shield or safty glass's and mask when doing it. You can get the Moly from Honda, do not use grease, or you will regreat it later. Ride safe, keep the rubber side down, in-joy the great Wings.
