Odd oil leak 82 GL1100I

Postby njooshka » Mon Sep 09, 2013 7:51 pm

Hello,

I have an oil leak which appears to be coming from the bolt which mounts the engine to the left front frame. The PO had sealed it with some sort of soft metal (tin/lead?) which I had to remove to get to the bolt holding the engine guard onto the frame. Not a huge leak, but is there some sort of seal inside there or is this a cracked block? It is close to, but definitely not coming from the water pump weep hole or the shift rod above.

Thanks

If the oil is actually leaking from "inside" that hole you might have a problem. The only place oil could be leaking is from the seam where the engine cases are mated.

Clean the whole area off with brake cleaner, to make sure you got rid of all the oil. Dust it with talcum powder, then run the bike. It will show you exactly where the oil is coming from.
