noisey engine/driveline

Postby heymandavid14 » Wed Apr 28, 2010 8:50 pm

I have a 1983 aspy with 26,000 miles on it. When i take off in 1st gear there is a noise that sounds like a gear slipping, as soon as I get moving it goes away, does anyone have a clue what it could be.

If it's a raspy vibration, it's probably the primary chain - it's what connects the engine to the transmission. It will rattle anytime the engine is under load at low RPM - i.e. when you're first starting off in first gear.

If you are in a gear that is too low for your current speed, and you open the throttle wide, it will likely do it as well. Try riding the bike along in fifth gear, and slow down until the engine is doing around 1500 RPM. Then open the throttle wide to lug the engine - you'll likely hear the same noise.

There are two ways to fix it:

- Synchronize your carburetors. When your carbs aren't in sync, some cylinders are producing more power than others, and the result is pulses and vibration on the crankshaft that rattle the primary chain. Synchronizing the carbs will help reducing the noise.

- Don't lug the engine. Slip the clutch a little bit when starting off, to allow the engine to rev higher.
