Tire recommendations for my GL1100

Postby Jimpalmer » Wed Sep 11, 2013 8:26 pm

So I have had a flat on the rear of the bike. Inspection found it was wore to the threads down the center. I looked at the front and checked the TWI on the tire, and the front tire is ready for a change also. I have have not been on a motorcycle for over 30 years, so I've been out of the loop. The tires that are on there are Challengers, three years old. I am looking at Michelins as a replacement, mainly because they last considerably longer on my personal and company vehicles. Would anyone have some input on replacement tires for my bike. I usually ride on the weekends with the wife.

You could start a real controversy here. Opinions on tires are widely varied. I have run most tires on my GL1100 over the 19+ years I have owned it. They all for the most part perform well for the average rider. The last few sets I have used are Bridgestone Spitfires. :D I think they perform good and wear well and are reasonably inexpensive. That is my 2 cents worth and I am sure we will hear some other opinions. What ever you choose, make sure you are vigilant on checking the tire pressures frequently. 8-)

I too have run Bridgestone Spitfires on this and my last touring bike. I had Dunlop Qualifiers and now I'm running Dunlop E3. I'll tell you to add Dynabeads to whatever tire you chose.

I favor the Metzler ME888's, but you just need to do your research and pick what best suits your needs BUT....don't cheap out! Tires on a bike are too critical....

Also +1 on adding DynaBeads....I also have them in my trailer tires.

I got 16,000 miles on rear and still going on the front with metzlers 880. Dyna beads have stopped my vibrations and tires last a lot longer. Also check the date of any tire you put on. Nothing over 18 months as you want to use them for a couple of years.

everyone has their own favorite tires so you just pick one and see how you like em.

I'll chime in and say that the Avon Venoms I put on my 1100 transformed it, I absolutely loved those tires - and put them on my 1500 as well.

As for Dyna Beads - read up here: How to install Dyna Beads in your tires

What kind of mileage do you get with the Venoms? I had Super Venoms on my Suzuki GS1100GK (full touring bike) - I never got more than 3500 km out of the Supers. I realize the Super Venoms are softer but... a good friend owed a bike shop back then so the tires were cheap for me...

I can't say, as I sold the bike before I wore them out. I did get a season and a half out of them first, with minimal wear, however.
