'83 GL1100A. Can anyone tell me what they might see out of order in this photo I took at 9:24 am this morning?

Missing pocket covers on both sides...?
Clock displaying time with no key in ignition causing parasitic power draw..?

Got it right at first look Wingsconsin :)
The pocket covers are intentional... I use both pockets every time I ride and it's simply easier to leave them off for access. The clock display is what's bugging me. It started about 2 weeks ago, I walked up to the bike in my hangar to ease it outside for a ride and noticed the clock display was illuminated dimly. At that point, the key was in the switch but was turned off. I wiggled it a bit and the display went out, but came back on a few seconds later. It's been doing this intermittently ever since. The power draw is apparently very minor, because even after sitting in my driveway over the weekend, with the display illuminated, the bike still cranks easily.

I had an earlier post on this forum about problems with the clock & radio losing their memory settings every time I turned off the key, but I found a poor electrical connection at a quick-disconnect from the bike chassis into the fairing. It required some anti-corrosion treatment (Corrosion-X®) and repeated connect/disconnects to polish the contacts, but I didn't have to jump any wires or create new circuits. (I had actually considered wiring the radio permanently hot at that time, requiring no key switch at all to operate the radio. I could see that causing something similar to this).

I'm puzzled why this display is illuminating in this fashion.
Any ideas appreciated :)

Locate the clock plug...do not unplug it..measure for constant power and ground then switched power...I'll guess that that the ground is not grounding well...
before you rip stuff apart....attach a ground to the battery and touch it to the clock ground wire..
If the clock goes off,you found the problem...If it's still on,measure for switched volts with the key off...
The faring plug has the ground wire in it...I had to bypass mine with a #12 wire to provide a better ground for the faring equipment.

The lawn does need edging... mine and the neighbors. The Lh vent screen was missing when I bought the bike so I bought one on eBay, will install it next time I have to get inside the fairing again. I was home alone when I took the picture this morning so hopefully no one was watching me thru the kitchen window:)
Did y'all note the mileage?? Had less than 13k on it when purchased in April of 2012.

Hi Littlebeaver, 'preciate you remember'n all my previous problems:) I seem to have taken care of all those at this point and have been riding pretty steady for about 3 months now.
The radio display has changed its behavior a little bit in the last day or so. It now almost blinks with an intensity change... dim, bright, dim, bright, etc. Still seems to have zero effect on the battery yet and I've not had much chance to troubleshoot it. Keeping the local airplanes in flight is keeping me busy:)
However... This morning, I came out to saddle up and head to work, and the blinking made me wiggle the key around to see if its position affected the display at all. Nothing happened until I turned the bars all the way to the right and pushed the key in and rotated it backwards to the bar-lock position. The display turned off completely. Returned the key back to its normal (off) position, and the display stays off, at least for now. I will report back later if that changes.

Love those electrical gremlins I do... :geek:
I still would start at the fairing plug....By your description, there's a poor ground.

I agree virgilmobile. I've been into that exact plug recently with my previous problem, and expect I'll have to do so again. I'll probably simply run a new dedicated ground cable from the battery or chassis into the fairing and see what that does first.

I haven't checked in for a while so I thought I'd follow-up on some of my posts. This one in particular has become a non-issue. I troubleshot it several times but other than early on; adding a dedicated ground wire to the inside of the fairing and attaching it to ALL the electrical chassis' in there, I never really addressed anything specifically. The ground wire seemingly made no difference at the time. The problem however disappeared about 2 months afterwards. I simply noticed one day that it no longer was lit up all the time. *Shrug*.
I appreciate all the input on this and enjoy reading everyone's posts regardless of the levity involved:) I enjoy a laugh at my own expense as well as the next guy :)
