just a question about rain

Postby jhbates2000 » Wed Oct 02, 2013 4:14 am

The other night while I was at work it rained pretty good, one of those showers that lasted for like 3 1/2 to 4 hrs. onsequently my bike sat out in the rain. When I got off work and went to go home it would not start, it acted like it didn't want to fire. I ended up getting a ride home with a co-worker and brought back a trailer and took it home. I put the cover on it and parked it til monday afternoon and when I went outside and tried to start it, she started right up like nothing was wrong. Does anybody have any idea what would cause this kind of problem?

First thing to check is the drain holes at the bottom of the spark plug wells. A piece of stiff wire will clear them.

Just pull out your spark plug boots...look down in the recess and you will see a 1/4" hole right under each spark plug. Take a piece of coat hanger and push it through, make sure they are completely cleared out.

Jumping in with a question? Do the holes go all the way through? My coat hanger ( just had to try something I didn't know about), bottomed out .

Yes they go all the way through so water can drain out. I don't remember them being large enough for a coat hanger, more like paper clip or thinner.
Another possibility is defective insulation on the plug wires. Have the plug wires ever been changed? If not it might be good to change them. I think they are permanently attached to the coils so you will need new coils too.
Good Luck.

The 1100 spark wires are screwed in at the coil.

Had that problem on the 1980 recently sold...
Never did figure it out...
I think the top shelter leaks and wets the coils and other ignition parts
Once running the heat created will keep it going pretty much..
But starting it was always a problem after a big rain...
It took 4 hours in the sun to dry off one day and another time we trailered it home and let it sit for 24 hours...
I traced every wire I could find to try to locate a leaky spark..
Sprayed & wiped plug wires with wd 40 trying to eliminate water...
Nothing....

I believe the PT Cruiser uses the same coil as the Neon.
