Fixed non-working horn

Postby mytown » Wed Oct 16, 2013 2:58 am

Not sure if this is worth the trouble, but it doesn't cost much. I cut the outer ring in half w/dremel, cleaned up inside then secured the ring halves back on using JB weld. Lots of white powder substance all over which I scrubbed off w/wire wheel. I also used a bit of sandpaper to clean what looks like ignition points:

The paper gasket that goes around the outer edge between the front and back halves was destroyed and was left out during reassembly but the horn works OK. I have another horn that appears to be in similar condition. I'm going to throw that one into my $50 ultrasonic cleaner and see what happens.

Glad to. I try to take pictures or a video whenever I work on the bike. Keeps a good record and every once in a while helps to share something. I've had those horn pics for a few months but the horn did not seem to work properly until I tightly secured the ring on the other day.

Just FWIW:

Saabs are factory equipped with Fiamm brand horns.

Those horns (from a Saab) are bloody loud.

Junkyards sell those things cheap, in my opinion.

I have plenty.

Saab is also a dead and buried car company (don't talk to me about the electric Chinese Saabs, they're just pipe dreams at this point), so more and more will find their way to the 'yards, as parts are, right now even, quite difficult to get as I well know. And there are NO more parts being manufactured, ever.

Might be worth a trip to get a louder horn, and save a repair. Though I do, generally, advocate repair.

Cosmo

It is on my list for winter to fix or replace my horns. They are far too quiet... I have the 3rd mid note (A, D and F) from 90s Caddy's installed on my 67 Olds to "help" it to be louder. One might make it onto the Wing.
My wife is the greatest - she won't let me sell my bike - I'm less grumpy when I ride...

I put a pair of FIAMM Freeway Blasters on my 1100. Solved that quiet horn problem.
