Changed oil (twice)now it smokes!!!

Postby washandy98664 » Wed Oct 16, 2013 5:33 am

After I got my prize home last spring the first thing I did was add seafoam and run about 50 miles to clean it out and then change. (While riding home shifting was kinda hard, difficult to find neutral.) My ride home was about 60 miles. No smoking at that time.
I then changed the timing belts, adjusted the valves, and synched the carbs.
Shortly after it started smoking, white oily smelling at start up. But after about 5 min goes away.
I put the Valvoline 10-40 motorcycle oil in. Not sure what oil the PO ran. Bike was sitting for about 3 years with only a couple of rides during this time.
What I am wondering is should I try the Rotella 10-30 and see if that stops the smoking???
I have only gotten about 150 miles in since this started.
Not sure what to do at this point about the smoking......
Thanks in advance for the help.

Mine is starting to do the same thing - valve guides (esp. exhaust) have been mentioned as a common culprit...

:?: Anyone else :?:

What would I check first? Hummmm I would remove the spark plugs and look to see if oil is on them.

As stated, overfill is a likely culprit and the easiest to check..

No I did not over fill, was 1st thing I checked.
I am going to change plugs and see if that helps.
I also have slow throttle response , has no real get up and go.
I double checked the carbs and they are synched.

In my case it's the right side. Plugs are not oily, oil level correct, all 4 cylinders are within 5 lbs of compression. Carbs are synched.

My friend,I am not a doctor, and I dont play one on tv-but if you asked me,I strongly recommend you chang your valve stem seals-the seafoam cleaned out the build up of caked up hard oil deposits arounde and in your seals,do to age of the seals in your bike, the seals are brittle and have lost there sealing effect to seal, untill the engine warmes up and expands them to seal. :)

Sorry to hear about the smoking. The problem with SeaFoam when used in these older high mi. bikes is it will clean out the crud that was keeping it from smoking. I would do a compression check, cold, with throttle wide open. If below 130psi, rings or valve guides are weak. If you put some oil in each cyl. and compression goes up, rings are bad, if not, valve or guides are bad.
As for oil I would and do use Rotella or Delo only, 15-40 in all my bikes and older cars/trucks as the new oil is designed for new model engines, including bikes and that goes for motorcycle oil also and is much cheaper then motorcycle oil. The diesel oil still has the ingreadiants that the old bike engines need. If you change oil and filter every 3,000 mi. it does not pay to use full syn. oil. Most oil today is semi-syn. oil. including diesel and truckers put 20-30,000 mi. on it befor a change. My bike has 49000 mi. on it and I will get 30 seconds of smoke from right side on cold start-up, but my compression is 155psi on all cyl., I will have to do a valve job in the future. Hope this helps some.
