trailer hitch install - '81 1100

Postby mxwllslvrhmr » Wed Oct 30, 2013 12:02 am

Hello ..
I purchased an Add-on Accessories trailer hitch. The installation seems pretty straight forward. One thing I noticed on the instruction sheet is that the hitch appears to be made for Aspencade models as the support bars attach to the hard baggage framework. My 1100 is a standard model with 3 hard sided Samsonite luggage bags.

Looks like some modified brackets and/or bars will need to made to facilitate this installation. .. Has anyone done this trailer hitch installation on a standard model?. .. Wondering what was done and if any problems might have been encountered.

Thanks

You're probably up against something a very small number of people have done - using that model of hitch with that model of aftermarket bags. You're likely going to have to fabricate some custom mounts to get it into place. Keep in mind you want to use triangles - multiple points of attachment - to keep the hitch from moving fore/aft, laterally, and up/down.

I contacted Add-on Accessories to inquire about the installation. Their reply back: The trailer hitch we sell is for bikes with saddlebags. We have nothing for a standard with no saddlebags. You may want to check the internet and see what has been done for your year bike.

As you mentioned, custom brackets and bars will be needed to facilitate this installation. .. Thanks for your reply.

I put a trailer hitch on my '75 Ducati 860GT. Pulled a BF Specialties Moriah.

Given your bike, I'd run forward to the passenger peg mounts, attach there. Then up to the shock mounts for two more attachments. That was all the Ducati had, and it pulled like a champ.

Thanks, Cosmo. .. That looks like the way to go. In the meantime I just found another trailer hitch that mounts to the standard model GL 1000. The item description says it will also mount up to the 1100, also. Looking to go with that one as the better option.
