Turn signal flasher or what ???

Postby velvetrider » Thu Oct 31, 2013 3:54 pm

Just noticed my left turn signal is doing the quick flash thing,,instead of click, click, click,, I'm getting
clicclicclicclic,,get the picture,,,lol.. On a car it generally means a bulb is burned out,, a lass,, bulbs
flash,,,weakly,,front and rear. I was "messing about" under the tank cover just before it started,
Removed the false tank and the small square flasher works fine to right, but has "quick flash" on left.
I suspect the flasher is going,,,, where would I possibly find one for an Interstate GL1100? 1983,
Thanks in advance my heros,
velvetrider,,

Hmmm...very interesting...flash OK on one side and fast on the other......but both front and rear on the left do flash, although they are dim.....

I think it's a "what"
Because the flasher feeds both left and right lamps, you can eliminate it as a problem...
Does the bike have a emergency flasher switch???Push it on and see if all 4 lamps flash normal to verify the wiring to the lamps(including the grounds) are intact....If the left is weak...replace or swap the front lamp...
It's also possible while "messing around" you pulled one connector loose in a plug and possible the left turn switch contacts are dirty....There is a way to bypass the switch to test this...Short the orange to the gray wire that feeds the switch....

I would also consider a short on the left hand circuit. The flashers will flash very quickly if feeding a short circuit. as the right hand circuit works okay, I would expect a short circuit in the left hand wiring circuit. Shorts are always difficult to find!! It really does NOT sound like a flasher relay issue to me, but a wiring issue.

Right, there's only one flasher, and it's used for both left and right signals. The right is still working fine, so I would be hunting down a dirty or corroded contact on the left side. Is the left bulb lighting dimly?

Normally if bulbs are dim it is a bad ground, and about 90% of electrical problems are ground problems. Good luck with it.

Thanks you guys,,,, I believe you are right ,,"bad ground" tracking that mutha down is something else.
I have the standard,, hot prob. with light and ground clamp. At this time I have not been able to
locate exact ground problem,,, Just call me "Sherlock," lol

temporarily you could supliment your questionable ground with your own new ground wire.

As virgil says, just run a new wire from a good earth point on the frame up to the indicator bulb, and live with that!! Much easier than trying to find the faulty wire/connector!!

My God I am definitely the "village idiot"..the bulb (left rear) had lost a tit and would not make proper contact. Works good now,,, Friend showed it to me.. Now if I could just get those #%&** caps back on the front fork tubes I'd be in business. Thanks guys for all your help.
