I am confused my neutral lite stays off and I get no continuity reading with the bike in neutral, or in gear bulb checks okay. My system seems to have only one (1) wire. I have had the front cover off three times now and inside portions look o.k. Could this by some chance be a two wire system on this switch or are all 82 GL 1100A a single wire ? I don't know if the lite was working before I got this basket case or not so switch could be bad. And does any one have a color coded wiring diagram for the 82 Aspencade ?

Sagebrush is right on the money.It grounds through the base of the switch,so there's only 1 wire.Somes times they just get gunked up from dirty oil.If you're getting good at pulling the front cover then you could pull it out and spray some cleaner into it,or you could try Seafoam or something similar in your oil.If you do take it out of the bike to clean it you could bench test it before you reinstall it and save yourself some work.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

My 82 has the Neutral switch in the bottom right of the engine sump and the frame has to be sprung to remove it. Your machine seems to have the switch under the front bottom casing so I wonder if its a late 82 model onwards? Generally these switches gets gunked up with the residual carbon deposits from the engine oil- the light stays on dimly when in gear and brightly when in Neutral. Its a single wire system and you check out the electrics by open and short circuiting the connection wire to the engine block (return) -The green light should go on and off.
