82' ignition switch problems

Postby jschwenk » Wed Nov 06, 2013 2:33 pm

This has happened several times now... Bike will NOT TURN OFF via ignition switch. Light stays on and bike keeps running on OFF position. I have to disconnect negative battery cable and bike and like turn off. When i re-connect battery...everything works as should...UNTIL i turn bike off again. This has happened a couple of times now... by that I mean that this problem seems to fix itself after a few weeks of doing this and works properly for several months, then it begins to happen again. Makes no sense to me! Why does the light stay off when the battery is re-connected if the switch is telling the bike it's still ON? Any suggestions will help!

Joe

2 possibilities....
the switch is actually broken inside or the regulator module is shorting out....
The regulator module has a "ignition sense" wire hooked to it...I think it's the black one...Should the module short internally,it could back feed 12 volts to the key on position and keep the bike running....

Kill the engine and the stator/regulator stops putting out power(up the black wire)..hook up the battery again and everything is normal till the engine is started and the stator/regulator puts out power again and back feeding the black wire.

The only way to verify would be to simply unplug the regulator module when the bike won't shut off.
A bit easier than trying to unplug the ignition switch.

By the way..is there ANY add on equipment??? radio,lights,switches,etc....

no add on equipment. I'll try this on the weekend. it sounds like it might be the regulator module.

Thanks for the help!

Have the 3 yellow wires been tended to.???
Bad connections there can damage not only the stator but the regulator module as well...
