Can you install a higher output alternator on a GL1100 in it

Postby gr8trthanu » Wed Nov 13, 2013 4:27 pm

I have a 1982 Honda Goldwing Aspencade GL1100 A I have it stripped right down. Is there an after market alternator with higher output that will replace the original one? How do you remove and replace the original alternator?

To replace the original alternator you have to pull the engine to remove the rear cover where the stator part (part with all the wires and the permanent magnets) of the alternator is bolted to.

You can install a later model series regulator to replace the OEM shunt regulator that will make more efficient use of the wattage that the OEM alternator puts out. It takes a small amount of modification to do it.

Here is a link to a thread on another forum that discusses it. New Regulator/Rectifier

Yes there is a high output alternator I have seen them on eBay that fits into the bike like the OEM I think that's what you wanted to know. I haven't seen it in a while but it does exist.. If I can find a link I'll post it later.

I've heard not so good things about the Electrosport. Seems that they are out of round and the rotor can interfere causing much destruction inside the engine. I would look for reviews before I installed one.

Don`t ya just love Romania LOL - geeshh what junk

All seriousness - the alternator from the GL1200 has a higher output ( 350W against 300W ) and is a direct swap. I have one on my 1983 GL1100AD and it works a treat.

The only silly question is the one you don`t ask. Everything else is game.
