help! battery cut out randomly

Postby alastair.kj » Thu Nov 14, 2013 6:49 pm

Hey folks,
I'm a beginner bike/goldwing rider and have a question.
Today, I drove my girlfriend to work, stopped and turned off the bike for about two minutes and then when I went to start it, it would not get going. The electric starter wouldn't work, though the lights still came on.
Someone helped me jumpstart it and I got it going, but what I'm wondering is what would cause this to happen and how can I avoid it happening again. There's not always room to do a jumpstart when you live in a city!

Thanks for reading. Looking forward to getting some advice.
Cheers

On the 1100's there is a connection that may cause issues with your charging system, the connection is on the battery side, remove the cover and look for two plugs, one of those plugs will have 3 yellow wires coming from the stator, check and make sure that it isn't melted, to repair this issue most people solder the wires together solid, and it doesn't matter which wire goes to which wire either...But check that,,,Also make sure the charging system is charging the battery by testing the volts at the battery while the bike is running using a volt meter or a simple multimeter...Anything over 15 volts is not good, anything under 12 volts is not good either, should be around 13.50 or thereabout... I'm not a electric guy so Virgil or someone else should come help out soon....I can just tell you what I know..good luck..sounds like it's not charging because a jump start got it going fine. At the top of the page hit search and you will fine lots of information on anything you can think of on this site...

Someone helped me jumpstart it

Some questions first....
When it wouldn't start, did you hear the start solenoid click as you pushed the start button..???

When it was jump started..were the jumpers connected to the battery lugs on the bike or direct to the starter..??

Would it start again later...??

How old is trhe battery?
Is the water level full in the battery? If not use distilled water to fill it up.

I don't know the exact age of the battery, but I don't think it's over a year old.

By jumpstart, I mean a rolling push start. Once I got home, I turned it off and started it again, briefly, no problem.

Yes I heard a couple clicks when I pushed the button.

I will check the water level, thank you!

Cheers,
Alastair

Starter connection perhaps, or a bad connection else where near the solenoid or battery perhaps, I'd check the ground at the frame too from the battery....

hearing it click and no start then starts later leads me to ....
intermittent starter or solenoid or loose battery connections.

Has the dogbone fuse been replaced with a fuse? Could be the dogbone fuse is cracked if it still has the dogbone.

That dogbone fuse is by the solenoid case or there somewhere.. isn't it? I changed that out with a aftermarkets fuse holder many moons ago...
