engine knockig

Postby mz250ts-1 » Sun Dec 01, 2013 11:28 am

Until worms up engine knocks when throttle aplied and only at low rpms
As it worms up engine runs beter but does not have stable rpms

To me knocking sounded more as miss fairing of cilinder 1 as I herd noise down in the exsaust pipe.
Here is what l did: l did get new premium Shell gas bottle of See foam and pour them in the tank.
After 100 km of riding idle rpms jumped to 1800 rpms but engine at this point ran smotly worm or cold.

This is my experience .

It might be worth checking on the condition of the exhaust sealing washers/gaskets. These can cause a knocking sound if they leak.

Just a thought - hope it helps.
The only silly question is the one you don`t ask. Everything else is game.

Could be engine not synched if knocking sound at low rpm's below 1500 or idle jet blocked one one carb..maybe time to clean and/or rebuild carbs.

Run some sea foam thru it first-see if that helps.
As for the previous members post -Take the basic steps first before you jump into something as complicated as a rebuild. One should do the homework before recommending such things.
There are better alternatives than OEM - try some before damning them. Athena gaskets kits are top notch - so is Randacks carb rebuild.
This whole web site is devoted to Goldwing owners who want to save money by doing it themselves. So why do we point them to the MOST EXPENSIVE way to go? OEM .A Athena top end gasket costs $110. It just gets frustrating to hear OEM till the cows come home. We should think cheaper, and equal to OEM, like Athena. . You all can praise OEM all you want, but a carefull buyer who stays away from crap sites like cyclesabre- will come out ahead.
Take a GL1100 1980 head gasket redo - add up ALL the individual OEM gaskets you will pay for-yep and the cam seals also. Yeah-reccomend that to a newbe

Maybe you should read the whole post before you comment..

" l did get new premium Shell gas bottle of See foam and pour them in the tank." So he already tried seafoam.

And who said only OEM in this thread..not me??? Randakk's(note spelling) site has lots of good info and the best rebuild kits, I agree. But, I said " try synch first and then if still a problem clean or rebuild the carbs.

Maybe you should do some homework before YOU comment. ;)

O.K.
Point taken. But my post about recommending other than OEM does have some merit? Regards, Johnyy

And the OP won't be riding for a bit in - as he is under good layer of ice... Southern Ontario is covered for the next while. But gives us an update if you can. I'd have to dig a few feet of snow just to get to the road...
My wife is the greatest - she won't let me sell my bike - I'm less grumpy when I ride...

"I'd go OEM on all of it..valve seals, fork seals and bushings, if you do head gaskets..OEM for sure..but if you want to save some $$$ try eBay George's fixit in FL. he has a good reputation and has stuff on eBay all the time."
Quite. Regards. Johnyy

From my experience that rattle when at low RPMs under acceleration is likely CARB SYNCH.
Just a little off and it will do it...it seems a critical item for the GL1100s...

In fact - When I did the '80 GL1100 we had we had actually synched enough to eliminate the knock..
But it was not all the way perfect.... once I got it perfect it added 10% in fuel economy, and ran much better..
