Starting issues part2

Postby BAEZ4eva » Tue Dec 03, 2013 2:54 pm

I went to start my GL1100. NOPE, just heard a "click" :x .
New starter and new battery have been installed. All lights and horn are working. Is it the solenoid? If it is the the solenoid, can someone please point me to who makes/sells the most RELIABLE one.

I got caught thinking it was my starter....It was hydrolocked....
You have 2 tests...
Easiest...pull all the plugs..Kill the ignition (NO SPARK) and try the starter again...

If it's a no go..test probe the STUD on the starter and push the button again...If it lights up.....no spark plugs in the engine...the starter is bad...
If it does not light up and the solenoid does click....get brave and short the 2 lugs together on the solenoid for a second (it will spark)...this should crank the bike and confirm the solenoid is bad....

Do the lights dim when pressing starter button? - If so then I would suspect worn bush ( power side ) inside starter motor itself. As the bush wears down the insulation on it can wear and short power straight to earth thus dimming lights.
Just a thought - hope it helps.
The only silly question is the one you don`t ask. Everything else is game.

After replacing a solenoid and taking a few other steps I finally determined that the engine was hydrolocked. (Removing the tank shelter and leaving the air filter loose allowed water to get into the cylinders even though the bike was covered.) I eventually ran the test virgilmobile suggests and water shot out of the cylinders about 20-30 feet.
