GL 1100 starter question

Postby triketrash » Sun Dec 15, 2013 11:40 pm

I've read quite a few posts about starter troubles and trying to distinguish between starter and starter clutch issues. When I hit the magic button, the starter often spins, doesn't engage the engine, and then as it spins down, I can hear what I think is the chain running against the inside of the housing. I'll repeat this anywhere from once or twice to a dozen times before it catches and fires up. Once I've been out and ridden for a bit, it fires right up once shut down and will do so repeatedly with no issues. Does this sound more like the starter or the clutch? If I'm hearing the chain, does that mean anything? By the way, I have a half can of seafoam in the crankcase right now, but have only ridden 60 miles since doing so. I'm hoping that if it IS the clutch that the seafoam will lean things up enough for me to avoid pulling the engine if I get a few more hours on it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Vince

Sprague clutch, definitely. You can't hurt anything by running the Seafoam a little longer. Just make sure you don't run it hard, your oil is pretty thin when diluted with Seafoam.

Cold temperatures seem to have a detrimental effect on the clutch.

ok guys- I'll probably drain oil and give it another seafoam treatment, see how it goes. In the mean time, I'll start studying the engine removal procedure :(

If your just having problems with the starter clutch,One fellow has posted instructions and measurements of where to drill a hole in the engine casting..((I assume using a greased drill bit to catch shavings))...to allow a direct spray cleaner nozzle into the back side of the gunked up area...
Much faster than removing the engine and just as effective as a full disassembly and hand cleaning..

Here's a bit of reading

Hey great idea- and then I guess you put a plug in there to prevent oil from coming out afterwards. I'll have a look at that Virg- today I drained the oil again and refilled with another seafoam treatment. I'll drive the heck out of it now and see if it stabilizes. Thanks again.

What weight oil are you running. If you have cooler temps there now a lighter weight can be tried.
This is what I do
