Incorrect speedometer on 83 GL 1100 Asp.

Postby ldqualls » Thu Jan 02, 2014 12:00 pm

My 83 Aspen has a speedometer that is read faster than actual speed. I have checked it with my GPS and it seems to be a linerial error, the faster you go the more the spread. Has anyone found a way to correct the read out.

The 83 Aspen has a digital speedometer using a electronic pic-up at the front wheel. No gears involved in this one. I have the right size tire according to the owners manual. Also the odometer is correct don't figure.

In fact, there are "gears" at the wheel...that's what turns the sensor...
***However you state that the odo is correct....
If it is exactly on the money, then there is a problem at the display end***...
The pulses that come from the wheel are processed to a special motor that operates the odometer.
The spedo display is a separate circuit....even tho it uses the same pulses,it has to reference a clock pulse that the odo does not.
It's most likley some dying electrolytic filter caps in the cluster processor board.
Sorry but it's a "live with it" or replace the entire instrument cluster....
I find it cheaper to use a tom tom for accurate spedo readings....
