Where are ignition components on 83 Aspencade

Postby MarkBell » Mon Jan 13, 2014 9:42 pm

Hi all! Great stuff here. I bought an 83 Aspencade last year to ride and restore. At first I thought it had points under the little cover on the left side rear of the head. Turns out it does not, as it has two coils, an ignition spark unit, and when I opened the cover? Just a black plug sealed up pretty well. No access underneath the plug, which was sealed up . When I stopped riding last year I noticed that I was getting fuel knocking as if the timing was not advancing. I figured I'd work on it during the winter. That's now. How does the unit advance timing? Given nothing was changed, could my coils or spark units have issues? Is what's called the "pick-up coil" something I need to access, clean or adjust?

The black things you're talking about are ignitors.

At the back of the engine are pulse generators. They are a set of hall-effect sensors that sense the position of the engine as an eccentric cam rotates inside them:

The whole assembly rotates slightly based on carburetor vacuum, so when the engine is under load, it adjusts the timing accordingly.

The very weak signals from the pulse generators are fed into the ignitors, which transform them into +12v ignition pulses, which are then fed to the coils, which transforms that into high voltage spark.

Oh, and they're quite easy to get at, too...

All you have to do is remove the swinging arm, and crawl backwards under the bike.

And it's not adjustable. At all.
