Starter Nightmare

So what is the secret to installing the starter on my 81 GL 1100, the fit is to tight with the o-ring on. Does the chain gear go on the starter first or the chain first ? The fit is so tight......is this area oil bathed ?

Did the new starter come with a cog and did you install it into the chain? If not, could be a spline to cog issue.

You need to put the gear onto the chain, then install the starter into it. It is a pain but they will go. On mine I got the spline started into the gear, then used a wrench on my crash bar to lever the starter in place. I didn't use a lot of force, but it was a constant pressure. Make sure you put some oil on the o-ring. I used some engine oil on the whole front of the starter when I put mine in.

Put biker on side stand, sprocket in the chain in the hole, slowly push starter into place..rotating it a little until you catch the splines..then shove it in all the way. A little grease on the o ring can't hurt. Before you start you may want to take the sprocket out and make sure non of the splines are buggered up by fit on the starter jsut to be sure it fits..

HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
