CALIPER ISSUE

Postby stevenstrack » Thu May 06, 2010 6:40 pm

Issue#1 So i've removed my left caliper from my "new" 1983 GL1100I and broke it down and cleaned it all up. Getting ready to install new seals for the pistons and the repack kit appears to be the wrong size. I immediately start to cus and assume that i was sent the wrong kit (K&L P/N 32-1446 BRK CALIPER KIT) from Saber Cycle. So I call them up and after talking to their rep it appears that my bike may have a gl1200 caliper. I'm not sure if that is possible. Does the gl1200 have larger pistons & rings?

Issue#2 The right caliper I had to get from EBAY because the bleeder plug was sheared off the one on the bike when i bought it and when i went to remove it with an easy out it broke off. So I just received the used right caliper and i need to install it so i can remove the pistons and repack this one as well. If the right side has smaller packings then I can assume that the left was replaced at some time with the larger piston housing. I asked the seller (neighbor across the street) if he was aware of any change to brake, he wasn't sure but said he believes he had the brake shoes replaced at some point. So it may have been done at factory or by previous maintenance.

Issue#3 The other thing I have to say is be very carefull with these calipers if you put them in the vice, i accidently crushed the pivot bolt housing (very soft casting) slightly but i think i straightened it out enough by driving the bolt back through. I hope this does not become issue #4.

I don't *think* the 1200 calipers will fit on the 1100, even the 83, which shares the same linked type braking system as the 1200.

If I were to make a guess, I would say your first mistake was buying something from Sabre Cycle. They are famous for selling wrong-sized parts, and then claiming the problem is with your bike. I know several people have used the 1983 GL1100 front caliper rebuild kit from partsnmore.com, which includes parts to rebuild both front calipers, with no problem.

I measured the caliper pistons and the one in question is 1.25" in diameter. That one is for the left side. I used one of the repack kits for the right side today. I now have to order a new kit for the left side but not sure what kit to order. The pivot bolts both need new boots but I want to get the right kit. Any sugestion? By the way the pistons for the right side was a 1.00" diameter.

Steve - when I recently re-built my callipers I discovered that the left side was different than what the supplied kit would fit. To make a long stor short - it appears that a PO may have swapped the left calliper of my 83 Interstate for that of an 82. I took the seals into my dealer and he matched them up with the 82 to confirm my suspicion. I was able to buy the required seals (and probably the boots but I didn't need them) and finish the job.

Can anyone confirm the 1982 GL1100 Interstate pistons are 1.25"? I don't want to order a kit only to have it be wrong. A PO obviously swapped the left caliper that has the larger pistons and it fits (bolts up correctly). Should I contact someone from Honda to verify what seals i will need? Thanks colemadad for your inputs!

ok...i think i just anwsered my own question and feel like a fool. The SABERCYCLE web site where i bought the original seals doesn't show a breakdown of the parts just lists a general description of effectivity (My mistake for not checking out the illustrated parts break down). I went to http://www.hondapartsnation.com and their site lists the proper seals left and right for the front caliper. Although their shipping costs are expensive hopefully in a few days i will have my problem worked out. Sorry to have wasted anyones time!

Kanada - no. The left one (which is the one that is the odd size) looks identical to the right front except that the pistons are just a titch smaller. That's the one that the Honda dealer helped me do a bit of research (and along with my guess) and we came up with the pistons seals from the '82 Interstate seemed to fit what I had. Likely there is some minuscule difference in performance but nothing that I can feel - on the '83 the left front calliper is separate from the inter-linked RF and rear.

Parts and more , Good place if you need 35.00 or more. To my misfortune when I need something I usally need it now and and it's less than 35.00

Yeah, that's the only drawback to that place. I've up until now just wandered around on their site and bought whatever else I *might* need someday to get it up to $35...I've also bought tools and stuff I didn't really need, but now that I've bought one of everything really, I can't justify buying more. :)

I agree with that too - it's worse here - I have to spend $60. which doesn't make sense considering there's a Canadian affiliation and the CDN/US money is close to par. Their payment method is a bit wonky too. All in all, I have nothing but good dealings with them so I'll continue to buy from them, probably just not as often as I have to artificially dream up a $60 dollar order.

They're actually a Canadian company, out of Ontario. Odd that they charge more for their CDN minimum orders.
