Smoke on Start Up

Postby Jakez » Mon Mar 03, 2014 1:25 pm

Hi Friends

Wonder if you could help me. I got my wing back today, after having replaced the coils, cdi, plugs, wires, carbs cleaned and balanced. I had the timing belt replaced as well. Now I have some white smoke upon start up, but nothing while riding. Why is it smoking when cold?

Kind Regards

If left on side stand oil seeps into the cylinder head left side and has to burn off..if you use center stand or block under side stand should be less smoke. Normal GL thing.

Be careful, smoke on startup due to leaning, is usually caused by oil sitting in the bores, but this creates blue smoke not white! White smoke is usually steam and is often a sign of failing head gasket!! Are you sure the smoke is white not blue? As stated a little bit of blue smoke when starting is common as we get a few miles on these girls if they are left for a while on the side stand. Try leaving it on the center stand over night, if you still get smoking in the morning then I think you have another issue, but if the smoke is blue and stops after a few seconds then it is just oil. Your oil level might be a bit high or shes just getting broken in, but either way it's nothing to worry about as long as the smoking stops after a few seconds.

Give it a smell, too - oil smoke smells like, well, burning oil, while coolant smoke smells distinctly sweet.

white smoke can also be from condensation if the bike is left outside as mine has been. keep checking oil and coolant.
