No Spark problem

Postby Jakez » Thu Mar 06, 2014 11:12 pm

Hi Guyz

So I finally managed to sort out the smoke upon start up. But now a new problem came about yesterday. After I filled up with fuel, I noticed the bike start to stutter and jerk and back fire and a loss of power at low RPM. As soon as I crank up the throttle to fully open the problem is gone and at 160kmph the bike just feels fine. So I thought it might have been water in the fuel (which does happen in SA). So I drained out all the fuel, then I let the bike idle out all the petrol left in the carbs. Then I went and got another 10litres of fuel and put it in. Well the problem still remained. So I went and took of the spark plug caps and tested for spark. The one sparkplug is dead, so I replaced it. Then I saw that the coil no 1 gives no spark. I took the wire of coil 3 and changed it with coil 1 but still the same. Does this mean I have to buy a new coil or is there something else I can try?

Kind Regards

Look for cracks, etc.,in the coil, and also clean the ground/mounting area for it.
If you find cracks, try to fill them with a 2-part epoxy, and test it again.
If still no spark, replace the coil.
Do you have access to a coil you know is good ? If so,use it to test for spark,as it could also be caused by a bad wire,or connector.
I'm busier than a one-legged cat,in a sandbox !
I can't fix it,if it ain't broke...you want me to break it,first ???

Give me a Goldwing,...or give me Viagra, cuz either way, I'm gonna ride !

I will do it when I get home today from work. I don't have access to a 'good' coil unfortunately. Spares for these bikes is very rare and often over priced therefore. I appreciate all the help you guys are giving me. Just proves that 'bikers stand together'. Will keep you updated on the bike. Thanx a million

Thanx. It does sound like a good idea except I'm not even remotely a bike electrician nor a mechanic. I'm a plumber by trade lol. But if I can't get a good pair of HD coils I will try the above idea. Thanx

There are only two coils. One coil runs cylinders 1 and 2, the other runs 3 and 4. So if you've got spark on 3 plugs, your coils should be OK, and I would be looking more at plug wires.

Wingadmin: Funny enough I thought of the exact same thing today whilst at work. I just finished the wires. I cleaned the tips and made sure they are tightened correctly at the coils and at the caps. She runs like a dream again. As soon as figure out how to put pics on I will send you guys some pics. Now I'm no electrician nor a mechanic but thanz to all of you on this incredible site I have to agree, nothing beats the satisfaction of doing something yourself. All of you are awesome really.

Good to hear you got it running right again! And you're right, doing it yourself feels great!
