neutral switch won't shut off

Postby liemsdad4130 » Sun Mar 09, 2014 3:48 pm

My neutral switch light never shuts off. It dims a little when in gear but doesn't go away. Is this just a simple new switch or is there some sort of adjustment on a 1980?

Contacts on the switch get stuck/dirty standard problem..you can clean or replace the switch but it's a pain to get at..or live with the light..

Yup.As I recall the neutral switch is a bit difficult to get out.A bit of prying the frame is needed.Got to loosen the lower engine bolt, drain the oil.
You should disconnect the wire first to verify the lamp goes out, just In case its a pinched wire causing the glowing lamp.

I've had good luck taking the switch apart and cleaning it up.If you do this, test it before you put it back in.I recommend replacing the "O" ring at the same time.
A dose of Sea Foam is a good idea too and while your on your knees, remove and clean the oil pickup screen.
By the way, have you put in a new set of timing belts yet.??
The best $40 you'll spend on preventive mantainance ever.

I haven't checked the condition of them yet but the guy i bought it off of said he had it done 5000 miles ago. I have a list of stuff i want to check and that's definitely one of them.

Unfortunatly there is no "checking the condition" of timing belts.
Seems they always look fine right up to the day they break and destroy the engine.
Personally I trust belts only when I can confirm there age and actual use (I replace them)....Just done 5k miles ago could just as easily have been 5k miles and 10 years....

Just saying..

Well I 100% agree with that. I will order the belts.

Its a dirty neutral switch . They get contaminated by carbon in the oil and partially short out when. The light goes bright green when in neutral and glows dimly when in a gear.
Loosen the bottom engine bolt and REMOVE the small fore to aft engine bolt which is close to your right foot or you will struggle springing the frame ( with a home made wooden wedge please!)
Change the switch and at the same time remove the gauge oil strainer which is close to the neutral switch and clean it whilst you have the opportunity to get at it. The oil strainer bolts can be a bit long and I replaced mine with allen bolts as are easier to get at with a cut down allen key

It can also be a pinched wire. The neutral switch wire winds its way from the dashboard all the way to the bottom of the engine where it connects to the neutral switch. If this wire gets pinched somewhere against the frame or engine, and shorts out against the metal frame or engine, it will complete the circuit and turn the neutral light on. If you disconnect the wire from the neutral switch and the light stays on, then you know the problem is not the switch itself, but the wire somewhere between the dash and the switch. If you disconnect the wire from the neutral switch and the light goes out, then you know it is the switch that is the issue.

I didn't realize it till I rode the other night but the light gets brighter when I shift to 2nd gear. I'm waiting till this weekend to check it out and sync the carbs.

I have a similar issue - the OD light will not light up 5th. I guess the diagnostics are the same as described above? I can't seen to find the wire down at the bottom of the engine. Does anyone have pix of where that might be?

Thanks
Bruce S.

If memory serves me right ,the 80 has only a neutral switch and is mounted on the right SIDE of the block. The 83 has a rotary type selector switch behind the front cover.

Thanks. Yes, my 83 does have a nuetral/OD switch behind the front cover. I am not ready to dig that far in for this relatively minor issue, but if there is an external wire issue, i'd be willing to spend some time on that. But i can't find any wire!

Hmmm.I think the wire exits the front cover in the top right side.Very hard to see.
