83 GL1100 Starter Button wont work

Postby thomascomcast » Mon Mar 10, 2014 2:57 pm

I put a new battery in my 83 GL1100 Aspencade that has been sitting under a tarp for a couple of weeks. I pushed the start button and It turned over a couple of times and then it quit and wouldn’t start with the starter button or even make a sound with the starter button - no click or buzz or nothin. To illimnate gas overflow in the cylinders I took out the sparkplugs and tried to jump start it by jumping the terminals on the starter solenoid. I got a nice gasoline bath because I was too stupid to turn off the gas **** on the gas tank when I last parked it . Then I put the plugs back in and tried to start it with the starter button – not a sound. Then I jumped the solenoid terminals and it started immediately and purred like a kitten. My intuition tells me I have blown a fuse to the starter button but all fuses on the fuse block under the faux gas tank cover seem to be OK. Apparently the starter button is on strike. Where should I look for the starter button for a problem? Could it be that little hidden fuse under the seat – I was pulling on the cable from under the seat to the solenoid and I may have pulled it loose. It's a simple problem somewhere, but where.

Interesting, Ok bike starts when you jump the solenoid (thats good) but when you push starter button you get nothing.
My first thought is the contact inside the throttle/switch housing have become corroded from not being used. you may want to open that up and try using a jumper wire to try to bypass the switch.
also, glass fuses may "look" ok but I have found that if you replace the one you suspect you may be surprised. but I think its the switch itself.

Could be any of the following:

- Fuse blown in main fuse block
- "Dogbone" master fuse inside solenoid blown/cracked
- Solenoid failed
- Starter button failed
- Kill switch accidentally flipped on

Does the headlight come on when you turn the ignition on? If so, that eliminates the first two items.

Is your neutral light on? Can you crank it with pulling in the clutch lever?

Headlight works and solenoid is fairly new and functions if I jump it with an old screw driver.

It cranks by jumping the solenoid bolts and runs fine in neutral.

This is not a test to see if the solenoid is working, its a way to bypass a failed solenoid.

It cranks by jumping the solenoid bolts and runs fine in neutral.

This eliminates fuses, and the kill switch. Could still be the solenoid or the starter switch.

I guess the question is...
Is the neutral lamp on when you push the start button and does the start solenoid click..?
