Speedometer and Tachometer GOING WACKY !!!!!

Postby kajunmisfitt » Tue Mar 11, 2014 8:21 pm

I have this 1982 GL1100A and when I rode it for the first time I seen that both speedometer and tachometer were bobbin up and down as I drove down the road. I as a "normal" red hotted American male that has been around automobiles and M/C that this is NOT suppose to happen this way. What do I do beside replacing the cables, I am assuming this will correct the problem. But if anyone has better advise please do tell !!!! Thank ahead of time !!!!

If it was my money, I would try removing the cables, cleaning them and re-lubing them first 8-)

I appreciate that thought, I can take the cables off,but I have never clean anything like this before. I have heard of poring oil down the tubing until it come out of the other end. But too clean them I have never done that. please advise me on how or what I do to get this done. thanks

My favorite solvent for cases like this is BrakeKleen. Its a great degreaser. It can be picked up at your favorite auto parts store. It usually comes with a red straw so you can direct the spray where you need it.

Remove the cable from the bike, pull the inner core out ,this is the part that spins and drives your speedo/tach. Spray the cleaner down the outer housing and the inner core until they are clean.wipe the inner core with a rag to help scrub it clean.

Some people like to use a graphite lube on the inner cable because it doesnt attract dirt and grime, I use a light grease like Lubriplate white lithium. But I clean my cables every year so they dont have time to build up any grime inside that relatively well sealed housing.
Under NO circumstance ever put any oil into the back of the speedo or tach EVER.
WD40 is not a good lube,it may work for a short period of time but it wont last. 8-)
