1983 Gold Wing Turn Signals

Postby lake_harley » Sun Mar 23, 2014 5:29 pm

Recently my 1983 Gold Wing's turn signals haven't worked right away after the bike has been sitting for a while, like 1 - 2 months. With repeated switching from "off" to one turn signal or the other they have always resumed working. Today, after a lot of my "switching" back and forth, they never did start working. The bike was ridden just a few days ago and the turn signals worked fine.

Unfortunately I don't have a manual, but was wondering;
1) From those more experienced with the electronics on the GL1100, do you think it's more likely the switch itself, or the relay? I'm pretty experienced with mechanical things and tend to think it's the relay, since neither side works.
2) If, or maybe I should say when I pull off the faux tank to check/replace the turn signal relay, which gizmo is the turn signal relay? Taking out the little tray under the hinged cover I see a small round "cannister" about 1" Diameter and maybe 1 1/2" long toward the front on the left side. Is that it?

I don't really think it playes into the signals flashing or not, but the speed sensitive automatic turn signal canceling part still worked when I was fiddling with it just riding down the highway at regular speed.

Thanks, in advance, for your suggestions on tracking down my little problem!

Lynn

When the flasher dies, it tends to die "on" - i.e. the turn signals come on, but don't flash. It could definitely be the flasher, or the switch. The switch is a fairly simple affair, and a good cleaning with some quality electrical contact cleaner (NOT WD-40) will make sure it is not grime or dirt in there causing the issue.

The round canister you've seen is the flasher. It's easiest to change by removing the false tank - it's held in place with a big rubber band. I replaced mine with an automotive electronic relay.

Thanks, WingAdmin! I appreciate the reply and suggestions. I'll report back with my findings and maybe it'll save someone else some head-scratching later.

i have been having troubles with signals on my 83 1100 also. The honda mechanic i go to tracked my problem to the self canceler which is on the steering column by the wight. I have not fixed it yet as I have not had time to take the fairing off. Please post your findings when you get yours fixed.

I found success with the "lazy man's" way......I gave the handlebar switch a healthy dose-and-a-half spray of electrical contact cleaner and, ta-da, the turn signals work again! I know I should probably take it all apart and give it a really good cleaning and then use dielectric grease on the moving parts, but it's working now and I follow the "if it works don't fix it" school of thought.

Thanks again for the suggestion and direction.
