how to break looose a stuck engine

Postby rambo » Thu May 13, 2010 9:27 am

I just bought a 1982 Interstate. The engine is stuck from sitting for a year. I have filled the plug holes with Marvel Mystery oil. How is the best way to try to turn the engine without doing damage?

I don't know about your mistery oil, I have always poured diesel down the bores and let is soak for a day or two. Then do NOT refit the spark plugs, get it into the highest gear it will go into and then I gently rock it back and forward until it frees up. Sometimes I put a socket onto the alternator bolt (the one the bolts onto the end of the crankshaft (not the case on a goldwing)) and try rotating the crank with a T-bar and socket, but you need to be carefull you dont break or damage the bolt!! I definately prefer to rock the bike in top gear until it starts to turn over. You need to put a very fine penetrating oil/diesel in the bores so that it can work it's way down past the rings, etc..

Agreed, rocking it in top gear gives you the best mechanical advantage, and uses a system that is designed to handle the torque involved: your powertrain system.

I'd use the front crank bolt..you are going to have to pull the covers to change the belts anyway why not do it now..but the other two methods mention will work if it's not rusted in place to badly..last resort remove the heads and use a 2x4 on the piston by hitting it will a small sledge..the 2x4 that is...

HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
